MA Music

The Music MA is a flexible programme designed to cater for those with a wide range of interests and specialisms. It is conceived as a ‘next step’ after the undergraduate degree, either as a stepping stone to research, as a qualification for teaching in the FE sector or simply to satisfy a thirst for development.

Pre-Masters

The pre-Masters year is designed to bridge the gap between your current qualification and the postgraduate programme at Birmingham. You will develop both subject specific knowledge and skills. In particular you will develop knowledge of a range of musical styles of various historical periods and cultures. During the pre-Masters year, depending on the optional modules you take, you will gain knowledge in the area of musicology, performance or composition .

One third of your pre-Masters year will be spent developing your English skills and academic skills; allowing you to approach academic reading and writing with confidence

Programme structure

During the pre-Masters year, you will take the compulsory Music module “Techniques of Harmony and Counterpoint”. You will then chose from a number of optional modules including: Baroque and Classical Music; Romantic and 20th-Century Music; Medieval and Renaissance Music; Popular and World Musics; Critical Musicology; and Music Analysis. These modules will ensure that you have the knowledge and skills base that you need to succeed on your chosen MA programme in Music. Studying alongside undergraduate students will fully prepare for the demands of a UK postgraduate course, as well as allowing you to adjust to UK assessment styles.

Career opportunities

Music postgraduates develop a broad base of skills including general skills such as communication, problem solving and research, and also specific skills developed by practice and performance such as self-management, team work and presentation. A snapshot of graduate destinations over a five-year period has identified a variety of career paths from being a music tutor or a singing teacher to becoming a business analyst or advertising executive. Over the last five years, we are proud that 100% of our Music students have been in employment or further study within six months of graduating.
