Programme structure

Introduction to Project Management
In this module you will develop an understanding of the critical issues and application of project management. You will look at the tools, techniques and body of knowledge involved in each stage of the project management life cycle, including project initiation, planning, execution, control and closure. You will consider how project management is applicable to all types of organisation and essential to the corporate strategy. You will learn how to use Microsoft Project as a tool for modelling and communicating a project, and how to use Microsoft Excel to create detailed financial plans.

Operations and Quality Management
In this module you will develop an understanding of the key aspects and practices in the management of operations and processes, including scheduling of activities, procurement and the supply chain. You will look at the concepts and theories of quality management, including planning, control and assurance, and learn how to apply these as part of the project management process. You will consider the historical evolution of operations and production management concepts, from craft production, through to mass production, lean production, agile manufacturing, modular manufacturing and mass customisation. you will also examine the totality of the tools comprising lean methods of production and kaizen continuous improvement activities.

Information Technology and Project Management
In this module you will develop an understanding of the concepts, theories and principles associated with IT project management. You will look at the opportunities and challenges, and consider approaches to resolving these these. You will examine risk managament techniques and how these are applied to deliver value. You will also gain practical experience in planning, estimation and evaluation.

International Strategic Technology Management
In this module you will develop an understanding of the importance of linking technology to corporate strategy. You will look at the tools and techniques that will enable middle and senior managers to develop, implement and manage technology, strategy and innovation at the business and corporate levels to meet the new competitive challenges of the knowledge-driven world economy in the 21st Century. You will examine the key characteristics of the converging scientific and technological revolutions, their impact on technological trajectories, convergence and discontinuities, and their implications for technology and corporate strategy in existing manufacturing and service sectors.

Advanced Applied Project Management and Planning
In this module you will develop an understanding of how to identify and manage the risks resulting from project blockers. You will consider the limits of theoretical models such as PRINCE II when applied to real life situations and the need to tailor tools and techniques to suite each project. You will examine the key obstacles to implementation and why project managers must anticipate resistance to change from individuals, teams and the organisation itself.

Advanced Project Funding, Finance and Risk Management
In this module you will develop an understanding of investment appraisal techniques, the structure of project finance, and the relevance of corporate finance. You will look at strategic considerations in estimating costs and adopting budgets for projects, and examine types of capital structures used in project finance. You will consider the various funding structures and the differences between public and private sector investment. You will also critically evaluate the importance of risk management, including in-depth analysis of related methodologies.

Corporate Governance, Ethics and Sustainability
In this module you will develop an understanding of the nature and application of Corporate Governance in modern organisations. You will look at agency and stakeholder communication theories, and examine the core differences between leading developing counties, including the UK, USA and France. You will consider Corporate Social Responsibility, interactions between ethical issues and sustainability, and how sustainable development is applied to corporate strategies.  

International Management of Mega-Projects
In this module you will develop an understanding of the fundamental characteristics of Mega-Projects. You will look at the role of finance through public and private investors, and examine the contributions that such initatives make to environmental, social, economics and institutional objectives at local, national and global levels. You will consider the international, national and regional juristictional frameworks that impact infrastructure projects, and analyse the diversity of stakeholders’ agendas, focussing on sustainable infrastructure investment at all scales. You will also learn how to appraise the differences between similar projects, such as Olympic stadia, airport terminals, and nuclear power stations, and become familiar with the methods of risk management throughout the supply chains of these.

Managing and Financing Projects in the TV and Film Industries
In this module you will develop an understanding of how complex projects in the creative industries are managed and financed. You will look at real feature films and telelvision shows, following a drama project from the birth of the story idea through to the cinema or television release. You will consider the ways to manage such projects successfully and explore how tortuous and full of pitfalls the creative path can be.

Business Research Methods
In this module you will develop an understanding of the common quantitative and qualitative methodologies used when conducting business research. You will look at relevant analytical, theoretical and contextual research, and learn to use software tools to analyse and critically interpret empirical finidings and data. You will consider how to prepare a research proposal and examine relevant frameworks for research ethics, reliability, and validity.

International Accounting and Finance
In this module you will develop an understanding of the role of accounting information in external and internal decision making. You will look at the properties of profit and how it’s measured, and consider the nature and role of the major financial statements. You will examine the accounting conventions underlying the preparation of financial reports in an international context, and the progression that has been made towards harmonised interational financial reporting standards. You will also learn how to undertake ratio analysis of balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, and become familiar with the key principles of management accounting.

The nature of the role gives you the flexibility to oversee the completion of a project in any sector or industry. Roles in Project Management can vary and are not limited to professionals who oversee the completion of a project.

It will be your role as the project manager to take ownership for a specific aspect of a project, making sure it’s delivered to all stakeholders’ satisfaction, individuals who provide detailed knowledge on a specific project discipline and those who provide professional support services to a range of projects.
