OVERVIEW

The University of Greenwich is a large and diverse institution offering a taste of city and country across our three campuses: Avery Hill and Greenwich in London, and Medway in Kent. People from more than 140 countries choose to study at Greenwich, part of a community of 4,200 international students and 1,150 EU students.

The university's vast portfolio of masters and degree programmes, including combined degrees, allows a wide range of subject options. A resource base of highly qualified staff, with wide ranging expertise and significant links with business and industry, coupled with over 26,000 students from a variety of backgrounds and countries, provides an imaginative and affluent learning experience for all.

  • Quality teaching - 89% of students who took part in the National Student Survey said that staff are good at explaining things, and also gave high ratings to the fact that their courses are intellectually stimulating and that lecturers are enthusiastic and make their subjects interesting.

  • Award-winning teachers - Greenwich staff include a winner of the Times Higher Education Most Innovative Teacher Award and several National Teaching Fellows, a status which recognises exceptional teaching.
  • Research that's outstanding - research on tsetse fly was named by Universities UK as one of the eight most important discoveries made in a UK university over the past 60 years.
  • Research that's life saving - they are developing stents (tiny artificial tubes for keeping open damaged arteries) that can deliver drugs more effectively into the bloodstream. Also a collaboration between the university and a UK engineering company has produced a bomb disposal robot that's lighter and easier to carry into the field.
  • Research that's inspiring - the university's Natural Resources Institute works across the world to reduce poverty and improve people's lives. Its research helps meet challenges such as pests and diseases and brings new technology and expertise to farmers in developing countries.
  • Glittering prizes - Greenwich students regularly win awards; recent prizewinners include the recipient of a national tourism prize and a Student Midwife of the Year, while an innovative business idea from a University of Greenwich law student recently won him a trip to the Hong Kong office of law firm Eversheds.
  • A focus on jobs - University works with employers to provide the workplace skills students really need. Employers help design and shape programme content, ensuring our teaching reflects the latest developments in industry.
  • Committed to the environment - they are the greenest university in the UK, according to the People & Planet Green League Table. Our carbon emissions are down 22% on 2005, and we've introduced solar panels, electricity from renewable sources and our very own beehive!
  • Inspiring settings - Greenwich Campus is based on a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. As part of the Old Royal Naval College, it was described by The Independent newspaper as "more breathtaking than the Versailles of Louis XIV".
  • Bringing benefits to business - University can solve problems that restrict business growth. For instance, we helped fudge manufacturer Fudge Kitchen develop a more retail-friendly product with a longer shelf life. Such relationships are good for business – Fudge Kitchen expects a considerable boost in turnover – and can strengthen our programmes through real practical examples.

ACCOMMODATION

The University of Greenwich has the best of both worlds, with city and country campuses.

  • Avery Hill Campus

The Avery Hill Campus consists of two sites, Mansion Site and Southwood Site, both of which are located in the 86-acre Avery Hill Park in Eltham, south-east London. Only a few minutes' walk apart, these two Victorian sites house some of the best teaching, living and sporting facilities.

For over 80 years the campus was home to Avery Hill Training College, some of whose 19th- and 20th-century buildings are listed by English Heritage, while on Mansion Site there is a beautiful library housed in a former ballroom.

  • Greenwich Campus

The Greenwich Campus is on a World Heritage Site on the banks of the River Thames. The university's largest campus is centred on three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The Independent newspaper described it as "more breathtaking than the Versailles of Louis XIV".

The university has recently invested £76 million in the new Stockwell Street building to house the extensive campus library, TV studios, editing suites and academic facilities for a range of disciplines. The Stephen Lawrence Gallery provides a showcase for the work of contemporary artists. Stockwell Street is just a short walk from the university's buildings on the Old Royal Naval College site.

The university bookshop is located in the Mews Building on the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College. The campus also houses the tourist attractions of the Painted Hall and Chapel.

  • Medway Campus

Located on the Kent coast, approximately 30 miles from central London, this splendid Edwardian redbrick and ivy-clad campus – dating from 1903 – has benefited from £50 million in investment since 1996. It is home to the Faculty of Engineering and Science, and also hosts programmes from the Faculty of Education and Health.

Extensive new purpose-built laboratories and research facilities have been opened at Medway. The centrepiece of the campus is a magnificent learning resource centre, the Drill Hall Library, converted from a naval drill hall and offering 100,000 square feet of space. It houses a library, computers, study areas and teaching rooms. The Pilkington Building next door, converted from the naval canteen, contains a lecture theatre, exhibition space, teaching rooms and a bistro-style café. Pilkington is used to host a variety of events, from the annual Christmas Dinner and Dance to Robot Wars.
