Programme structure

This programme seeks to prepare students for work in the leisure industry, including HE sports, sports agencies and local authorities by developing high quality graduates in a research active environment. It is expected that students taking the programme will develop the skills to allow them to critically evaluate new developments/theory and integrate this knowledge where appropriate into their professional practice.

Graduates of the programme will be developed as lifelong learners with a conceptual understanding of the theories behind sport policy and management.

Research Methodology in Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation (30 credits)

This module will develop your research skills within the areas of sport and physical activity. It will cover the practical usage and critical analysis of methodologies providing an essential understanding of conducting research in a real world sport/physical activity environment. Through this module you will gain an in depth understanding of conducting research in a real world sport/physical activity environment which will allow you to develop as a research-led practitioner. The module also provides the grounding for the masters’ dissertation research.

Professional practice in sport (30 credits)

This module seeks to develop enquiring, critical and innovative approaches to professional practice in sport. Linking theory and practice, you will be encouraged to critically evaluate strategies used to facilitate and support professional development in your own workplace. Further, in the context of sport pedagogy, you will examine the relationship between learners, educators and context in facilitating professional learning.

Sport Policy and Politics (30 credits)

This module is specifically designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of sport policy priorities in a variety of national and international settings. A range of theoretical approaches to sport policy analysis and key concepts in the study of sport politics for example ‘soft power’ and ‘governance’ are examined. Indicative topics include the increasing political use of sports mega-events, the political economy of sport, the ‘virtuous cycle’ of sport, sport development in international context and moral dilemmas in global sport policy.

Sport Business and Management (30 credits)

Using a case study approach, this module examines both theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of sport business and management. Working in partnership with University Sport Birmingham (USB) students will have a unique and hands on opportunity to understand the business and management processes involved in establishing a new Sports Centre at the University of Birmingham. As a consequence, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of sport industry-related principles such as leadership and entrepreneurship; project management and the management of change; finance and financial reporting; marketing, sponsorship and sport and the law.

Dissertation (60 credits)

In this module you will integrate the areas covered in the taught modules within the programme. You will propose a research project, submit ethics, undertake and write up a piece of academic empirically based research relevant to your area of practice and interests.

Career opportunities

It is envisaged that students will gain a wide range of transferable skills which will be highly valued by employers in all areas of recruitment. Destinations may include work in sport facility management; sport and leisure consultancy; sports development; local authority or private sport and leisure provision; national sport federation organisations.

Successful students may also wish to undertake PhD research.

Engagement with Sports Industry
Alongside the delivery of the course’s academic content, students will also have the opportunity to attend regular guest lectures from industry professionals and employers alike who are currently working at the highest levels within the sports policy and development, sports business and management, and sports media and marketing sectors.

Additionally, many of our MSc Sport Policy, Business and Management students will have the opportunity to gain vital work experience alongside their studies with one or more of our below, Birmingham-based, postgraduate partners.
