This photography degree contains a rich variety of contextual modules, which encourage you to consider photography across a broad spectrum of genres and applications, and in relation to culture, history and theory. Gallery visits and field trips are built into the course and you can also arrange work placements. Your practical development on the course will culminate in a major public exhibition of your photographic work.

Programme structure

The first year of the photography degree includes traditional silver-based photography as a significant area of study. It also introduces and explores key concepts that are relevant to the wider photographic medium through challenging practical projects.

All practical modules – whether based in documentary or fine-art photography, or designed to explore specific characteristics of digital media – will develop your technical skills and provide stimulating creative assignments.

The photography degree course content will reinforce your practical potential through a sound knowledge of the history of photography and an awareness of contemporary developments in the medium. The contextual elements of the course also encourage you to think critically about photography and its impact on culture and society.

Career opportunities

The diversity of course content, in practical and theoretical modules, ensures that you graduate with an all-round critical understanding of photography and its relationship to a range of other media forms.

Recent graduates have successfully entered the photographic industry, established themselves as self-employed photographers or progressed to study photography at postgraduate level.
