If you’re passionate about film and want to carve out a career as a screenwriter, film critic, festival programmer, marketer, PR, or even in film research and education, then this course is for you. You’ll be taught by a diverse team with professional research experience. Work placements are built in to the degree at local art-house venues, festivals and renowned entertainment locations, so you’ll gain a first-hand understanding of the film industry. There is also the chance to visit exciting film festivals, on research trips to Edinburgh and Rotterdam.

Your lecturers will cover a wide range of specialisms, including audiences and identity, art-house, horror, independent cinema and animation. Exploring the history and evolution of film as both an art form and an industry, you’ll deconstruct and analyse film texts, from classical heritage adaptations to the comic book big screen movement. Discover how to engage audiences in preparation for your own film event, which you will plan and organise supported by staff as part of our collaborative film festival.

A work placement is built into the course, so you can gain valuable skills and contacts before graduating. Previous students have worked at Pinewood Studios, the HATCH youth programmers group and the Gloucester Guildhall. Benefit from the Media School’s festival, where you can attend guest lectures and workshops with animators, screenwriters and directors. The festival has previously hosted a BAFTA Shorts screening and guest lectures from actor-director David Morrissey and cinematographer Ben Smithard.
