In choosing to study this BA European Languages degree you’ll specialise/major in two languages whilst also studying for a third at minor level. With a choice of French, German, Italian and Spanish in addition to fluent linguistic development (speak, listen, read, write, translate and interpret) you’ll also immerse yourself in the study of your languages in the wider European context that includes society, culture, social and professional relevance. You’ll take a year out to spend abroad, and it’s during this period that you’ll start reinforcing your academic study with practical experiences. The Department is renowned for the friendly and supportive way it treats its students and on successful completion you’ll have developed the skills and capabilities sought by employers of Modern Language graduates. These traditionally include teaching, translating, and interpreting, but strong language skills are also in demand for Finance, Law, Business and the wider Public Sector.

This distinctive degree scheme combines the study of French, Spanish, Italian or German – two languages to a major level and one to a minor level. The degree will give you proficiency and immersion in multiple languages, understanding the languages themselves and their cultural and historical contexts, all of which are essential to a proper understanding of a particular language. As a language graduate, you will have developed all the skills of other Arts graduates (communication skills, critical analysis, and the ability to structure an argument, for example). In addition you will have the advantage of having lived independently in at least two foreign countries, as part of the year abroad programme, significantly enhancing your employability.

The Modern Languages Department at Aberystwyth takes seriously its two major commitments – teaching and research. Knowledge is advancing at a faster rate than most textbooks are, and the Department believes that it is essential that students learn from experts at the forefront of academic research. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment the university was placed in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university’s research was of an internationally recognised standard.

Career opportunities

Graduates have successfully gained employment in a variety of roles, Assistant Immigration Officer, Paralegal, Accountant, English Language Assistant and Planning Officer.
