Programme structure

What you study?
Year One

Visual Awareness (60 credit points)
You’ll start to develop your visual awareness skills, and be introduced to a range of subjects and skills concerning the creative and fashion landscape. Through individual and group work you conduct brand visual analysis, present your findings and create a brand zine. You will also submit a digital portfolio of your work at the end of the module.

Creative Networks (60 credit points)
You will start to understand the creative networks and relationships which drive fashion creativity in the context of brand analysis, deconstruction and creation. You will also be given the opportunity to develop your practical visual communication skills using a range of media and IT technologies.

You will complete a city research project based on the optional trip to New York (or another city of your choice), a brand advertisement analysis, and the research, development, launch and promotion of a new fragrance. You will also complete a reflective journal and submit a portfolio of your work end the end of the module.

Year Two

Communication and Message (60 credit points)
You will develop your knowledge in the communication of fashion and lifestyle in the global environment, and the development of the brand message. You will cover trends in relation to a broader cultural context and help you to understand the link between branding, advertising, PR and the visual message. You will further develop your research and critical analysis skills in relation to graphics practice and design development.

You will also start to focus on self-promotion and the development of an online portfolio. You will work on a variety of briefs, including live projects, both individually and as part of a team.

Promotion and Context (60 credit points)
You will explore how fashion information is communicated to audiences in different contexts. A focus is to develop your own observational skills, in terms of trend identification and prediction. You will also continue to develop your visual media skills in software and photography to support your visual presentation and design layout.

A team project will answer a directed or industry-generated brief, which will require you to show an understanding of what is happening in industry currently, but also considering future scenarios.

Final Year

Negotiated Project Stage 1 (60 credit points)
You will propose two self-devised projects, one of which you will complete during this module, and the other as part of the next module. You will complete idea development, analysis and research and present an 8,000 word printed Visual Research Document. As part of a team you will also select a live project brief which you will start to work on through this module, delivering a final presentation in the next module at the end of the year.

Negotiated Project Stage 2 (60 credit points)
You will complete a second self-devised research project, which will consider the creative idea, implementation, and industry focus depending on your career ambitions. For this you will produce an 8,000 word visual document with creative visual outcomes, which could be artwork, magazines, styling images, film and video, mock web sites or a live fashion event.

You will conclude the live team project that you started in the previous module, delivering a final group presentation and submitting a 1,000 word script with creative visual outcomes.

You will also exhibit your work as part of the Degree Show and contribute to the PR, marketing, promotion and communication, and event management. For the exhibition you will showcase an on-line digital portfolio with your best work from the course, and selected creative visual outcomes from your final-year work.
