This programme is suitable for those who have a Diploma in Higher Education and are a registered nurse or midwife who wishes to work in sexual health. The courses in this award cover practice areas such as contraception, sexual infections, cervical cytolog, HIV and AIDS.

Those without a professional qualification can also access this award and pursue courses without a practical element. Courses without practice cover areas such as promotion of sexual health, HIV and AIDS.

These awards enable health professionals to respond to the changes recommended by the Department of Health and to initiate developments in their areas of practice. Health professionals may choose to do sexual health courses as ‘stand alone’ courses.

Courses are available in contraception (both foundation and advanced), in sexual infections and cervical cytology. These courses are offered in attendance mode. Fertility courses are also offered and these have the added advantage of being offered in an online mode allowing students from any part of the country to access them.

The university also offers a Graduate Diploma for those practitioners and sexual health workers who have achieved graduate status and who are entering the specialism of sexual health and wish to gain a strong foundation of knowledge and skills and develop their professional practice in order to provide a high quality service for clients.

The aims of the programme are:

To develop a knowledge base which will enable the student to select and apply appropriate knowledge to her/his practice in sexual health
To promote understanding of concepts related to sex, sexualities and sexual health, including the negative effects related to prejudice and stigma
To enhance professional accountability and ethical decision making within the inter-professional context.
