Overview

BA Games Art is designed to specifically address the visual needs of games and their visual development. Whilst developing an understanding of the needs of coders and game developers, students will have a solid grounding in visualisations techniques, character, environment and concept design.

This course has developed in conjunction with industry to address the real expectations and demands of creative professional practice within the games and related industries. Working within a studio environment with dedicated facilities, students will have the opportunity to develop a signature style whilst understanding trends and technical developments.

- opportunity to collaborate with students from Computing courses in order to learn about industry practices in a simulated games studio environment;
- emphasis on core skills such as drawing, perspective and concept development;
- opportunities to get advise/work with animators and illustrators.

Programme structure

In your first year you will learn effective research techniques for the purposes of visualisation and idea
development. You will also have the opportunity to engage with specialist software training in preparation for working on a collaborative project.

In your second year, you will not only have the opportunity to work collaboratively but will have the opportunity to propose a project which you will take from concept to finished artefact, demonstrating time and resource management as self sufficiency and quality control.

In your third year and final year, you will create the most significant contribution to your area of practice in the form of a market analysis. You will not only have the opportunity to work on an external project but will also have the chance to develop a relevant portfolio of industry facing work that demonstrates a high level of technical and creative ability.

Career opportunities

This course can develop your skills in a variety of contexts. Increasingly, graduates of this course will adopt a portfolio approach to graduate employment and this will typically include working on a freelance or commissioned basis. Graduates can use assessment work to showcase to employers their ability as evidence.
