Overview

This full-time Master’s degree programme builds on a student’s creative, design and technical skills with our production and design-orientated programme that focuses on computer animation, audio/video, and games. You will expand further your ability to perform innovative and professional work across the media production industry. Our degree programme also seeks to build project management skills and develop a systematic approach to conceptualising and leading media projects by focusing on practice-oriented project work modules that combine state-of-the-art theory and practice. Students can furthermore choose from a broad range of in-depth modules for further specialisation.

Programme structure

The two-year course offers the following key areas, which can be individually combined by taking optional subjects:

Computer animation
Visual conception, design basics, 3D modeling, animation production, character animation, motion capture, procedural animation, generative and interactive arts.

The Digital Arts course also enables students to specialize in computer animation, among other things. The discipline of computer animation offers practical training and the opportunity to use the techniques learned in demanding projects.

Extended basics and advanced methods of conception, image design, storytelling and finding your own project idea lay the foundation for high-quality productions in the fields of character animation, abstract animation or hybrid film. The latest technology such as an available render farm, virtual reality or motion capture systems help the students to breathe life into the images and to tell impressive, immersive stories.

In addition, background information from the acting and economic context as well as teaching staff from the professional production environment support the students in successfully implementing their projects. Experimental concepts in the field of design are also not neglected with the use of generative methods.

Audio / video
high-definition post-production, digital compositing, visual effects, audio production
More on the focus on audio / video.

Video
The focus in the video area is on practical work within a modern compositing / visual effects pipeline. This ranges from experimenting with the latest video hardware in the Greensceen Studio to 3D compositing and visual effects in Nuke to final image processing in the Color Grading Studio.

Topics: 4K Video Production, Digital Compositing, Visual Effects, 3D, Virtual Production, Motion Capture, Virtual Reality, Aerial Filming, Color Grading.

Audio
The audio production subsection has the perfect sound track as its goal. The focus is clearly on the production for moving images and interactive media such as games, or VR / AR applications. Conception, as well as practical work in a professional recording studio with modern hardware and software tools is in the foreground of the courses. Workshops with lecturers from an artistic and professional environment provide insights into current trends and production techniques. In parallel, there is personal support in the implementation of individual project visions.

Topics: conception, foley & sound design, film music, multi-channel production and mixing

Games
Concepts and Design, Story Development, Asset Creation, Low-Poly Modeling, LevelDesign, Audio for Games.

The thematic focus “ Games “ in Digital Arts addresses the creative view of game development. The subject areas of game design, level design and game art are discussed in more detail. During the course of their studies, students have the opportunity to implement what they have learned, their ideas and concepts in the form of game prototypes (e.g. virtual reality experiences or serious games ).

Career opportunities

As a graduate, you are a broadly trained media professional with project experience and extensive detailed knowledge in one or more special areas. You are not only prepared for demanding, leading tasks in the conception and design of innovative media projects, but also in a position to lend a hand with the concrete implementation in the right place.

Your specific qualifications make you a much sought-after employee in a global professional field, especially in computer graphics and animation, in motion graphic design (advertisement, TV, film, event design) and in visualization (industry, science, architecture) , Urban planning, sports, transport, education), real-time visualization and simulation. Exciting job opportunities are available as a 3D artist (animator, modeler, shading / lighting), 2D artist (motion designer, compositor, 2D FX, tracking), VFX operator and game artist.

With your scientifically demanding master’s thesis, you will also acquire the formal requirements for a subsequent doctoral degree at a domestic or foreign university.
