Programme structure

*Year One *

You’ll be supported by our course team to establish the core competencies of graphic design. learning how to approach design and tell a story visually. Workshops, assignments. peer critiques and reviews will help to shape your confidence and capabilities, while lectures and seminars from both resident staff and visiting speakers boost your understanding of the discipline.

o Graphic language and communication – introduction to visual language
o Design process – understanding the route to final design outcomes
o Difference & identity – working from the needs of others
o Narrative – how to tell a story visually

*Year Two *

The central part of our course introduces you to the professional world in greater depth through skills and project-orientated tasks, to help prepare you for your final year before graduation. You’ll begin to grow more deeply as a designer, building individual reflection on professional ambitions.
The 2nd year also includes study trips, usually to London or Amsterdam. These feature designer-led workshops and studio visits to the likes of Pentagram. GBH. Fitch. Mother and Trapped in Suburbia.

o Consumerism – branding and communication in the real world
o Typography – developing typographic skills and appreciation
o Design directions – approaching practice independently
o Collaborative practice – live briefs from designers

*Year Three *

The final year focuses on intense project work, industry-facing events, a dissertation and professional practice workshops to ready you for life after graduation. The events provide a platform for you to showcase your material and include exhibiting at D&AD New Blood, as well as our own exclusive show at the Royal Society of Arts. Both these and our design networks help you to target studios or consider postgraduate study to support your future ambition.

o Journeys – developing studio projects
o Dissertation – critical writing
o Destinations – concluding studio projects and portfolio
o Transitions – tools to support your move into professional practice

Career opportunities

o Work as part of a design consultancy
o Set up your own consultancy or work freelance
o Careers in multidisciplinary design consultancies or as specialists within the areas of packaging design, branding, advertising, television graphics, interactivity, exhibition design, magazine and book design, and animation
