Programme structure

In the “Medical and Bioinformatics” course, IT specialists are trained in the field of life science. After the first year of study, you can choose from one of two branches of study: medical informatics or bioinformatics.

Common topics for both branches of study:

Technical subjects: training in software development, database technologies, image processing and artificial intelligence.
Natural science subjects: In order to understand problems from practice, knowledge from the fields of molecular biology and medicine is an important prerequisite. You learn these basics.

What to expect in the medical informatics major:
-The human being from a medical point of view: anatomy, physiology and pathology
-Health: Healthcare, Medical Documentation, Integrated Care, E-Health and Information Systems
-Software development: algorithms, programming languages, artificial intelligence, web engineering
-Medical data: databases, modeling, information systems
-Image processing: CT / MRT, 3D processes and systems, virtual reality, therapy / prosthetics
-Medical / bio laboratory: practical work, physiological and other laboratory tests and evaluations
-Project development in a team

What to expect in the bioinformatics major:
-Biology: processes of life, DNA, proteins, evolution and human biology
-Genetics: structure and function of genes, development of diseases
-Proteomics: Identification and analysis of proteins and their structures
-Software development: algorithms, programming languages, web engineering, databases
-Working with biological data: comparison of DNA or protein sequences, protein structures, pathways
-Artificial intelligence: techniques of machine learning and “artificial intelligence”
-Laboratory technology: practical work, modern processes such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS)
-Project development in a team

Career opportunities

As a medical informatics or bioinformatics graduate, you belong to experts who not only understand the methods and tools of computer science, but also have sufficient knowledge in the fields of medicine and molecular biology. This means that you are in demand wherever IT is used – especially, but not only – in the health sector, e.g. B .:

in hospitals, medical centers, nursing, rehabilitation and care facilities
in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals
in research institutions at home and abroad
in health, sports and wellness facilities
in ecology and the environment
in software companies of all domains, especially when data analysis is the main focus
for / in bio or medical laboratories
as well as generally where there is a lot of data to be analyzed.

Occupational field of medical informatics you deal e.g. B. with …
imaging diagnostic systems
Hospital information systems
Doctor software
“Virtual surgery”
medical knowledge systems
Search for medical informatics:
IT departments of hospitals
Rehabilitation centers
Doctor’s offices
Companies and health care institutions
Software company

Professional field of bioinformatics you deal in practice e.g. B. with software …
to identify genes
for the computer-aided diagnosis of diseases
for drug development on the computer
to set up biological databases
For example, looking for bioinformaticians:
biotechnological and pharmaceutical companies
medical institutions and research facilities in Austria and around the world
