Programme structure
Metallurgy and plastics technology
In the technical and natural science degree in Materials Science & Manufacturing Technology, you can put your knowledge in the field of chemistry and physics into practice . The course is very research-intensive and practice-oriented . Several 100 local companies are looking for WFT graduates – the job prospects are great! In addition to the specialization from the 5th semester, the great advantage is the gradual career entry in the Master’s. A lot of project work can be done here for companies during your studies.
The entire value chain – from the raw material to the finished product – is conveyed in the bachelor’s degree . The focus is on operational production and the materials to be processed ! The course deals with questions such as: What materials is a product made of? How are plastics and metals processed and optimized so that the product is durable and visually appealing? Why is it if a part breaks?
Upper Austria and the surrounding area have an extraordinary density of world-leading companies in the field of materials. Due to the increasing globalization with foreign branches and corporate networks, all paths are also open to graduates internationally.
Focus of the training
The basic semesters 1 – 4 offer a broad education across all material groups .
From the 5th semester, there is a specialization in the areas of plastics processing and metallic materials with relevant special subjects.
In addition to broad and application-oriented training in the technical field, the course also offers more content from the areas of project management, economics and social skills.
The main questions that are dealt with in the “Materials Science & Manufacturing Technology” course are:
What materials do I use to make a particular product?
How do I process these materials in order to obtain a functional, aesthetic and long-lasting product?
How can I optimize the product, the manufacturing process or systems for processing materials?
How can I improve the material or component in the event of damage?
With a large number of practical laboratory exercises – in-house and at partner companies – the theoretically acquired knowledge is immediately implemented and tested!
Career opportunities
In addition to broad and practical training in the field of materials and their processing, economic and social skills as well as project management skills are taught in the course of the course. Therefore, in addition to qualifying in many technical fields, the graduate also has the opportunity to take up important positions in sales or management. It is precisely these positions that companies like to fill with people with solid technical training.
The fields of application of the graduates of the degree program are in particular in the following areas:
-Product development with construction, material and technology selection
-Plant and tool construction
-Processing, procedural and process development
The focus of all fields of application are the materials with their application and processing-specific properties.
