Programme structure
This course of study trains you to become lightweight construction and composite experts with a broad overall understanding of materials, construction methods, simulation and manufacturing processes.
Lightweight construction and sustainable product developments are becoming increasingly important in the aircraft, automotive and sports industries as well as in general mechanical engineering. Composite materials are also used in alternative energy generation, e.g. in wind power.
Main areas of study:
-Technical basics (e.g. mathematics, physics, mechanics, CAD, chemistry)
-Materials science (composites, light metals, plastics, metals)
-Lightweight construction: Structural, material, manufacturing and system lightweight construction
-Simulation, building methods and construction
-Bionics
-Processing of composite materials and process simulation
-Tool and mold construction for composite processing
-Laying out composite components
-Material testing including non-destructive testing methods such as computed tomography
-Business administration, languages and social skills
-Recycling and sustainability
-Practice and research
From the very first semesters onwards, students can get a taste of practical experience in industrial companies or in research projects. With innovative research projects, the cooperation with the Transfer Center for Plastics Technology in Wels and numerous national and international research and industrial partners, the course has an excellent industry and research network with top know-how.
Unique bachelor’s degree
This bachelor’s degree is unique in this form in Austria. The focus is on material and processing know-how as well as on construction and calculation, which creates a unique selling point in Austria and neighboring countries.
Career opportunities
Lightweight construction is becoming increasingly important worldwide in areas that are important for (Upper) Austria, such as automobile construction and aviation, among other things through e-mobility, mechanical engineering and sport. Graduates work in the areas of product development, component design, composite processing, material and process development, joining technology, simulation, construction, lightweight construction, optimization and applied R&D. In the domestic industry (e.g. FACC, BMW, MAGNA, SGL, KTM, FILL, ENGEL, Peak Technology, Greiner Perfoam, VOEST, Mubea Carbotech, AMAG) there is an acute need for academics in the field of lightweight construction and composite materials .
