Career opportunities
This course is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career by giving you the knowledge and skills to understand and be able to respond to the diverse issues and challenges facing the energy industry.
With energy demand set to grow by 35% by 2035 and over a third of respondents to the Hays 2016 Oil and Gas Global survey concerned about skills shortages, there has never been a better time to start your career in the industry. The National Environmental Research Council (NERC) have carried out a 2012 Review of Skills Needed in the Environment Sector, which highlighted a number of skills which this course will help you to develop, including multi-disciplinary knowledge, energy supply, numeracy, data management, risk and uncertainty, and sustainability science and planning.
Providing you with an understanding of the petroleum industry and its ancillary industries, including more sustainable energy resources, together with specialist skills in risk, safety and financial management, this course is designed to help you find employment with national and multinational oil companies, environmental consultancies, government agencies and regulatory bodies.
Throughout the course, significant opportunities exist for you to enhance your career skills. For example, specialist tutors will provide practical guidance on sourcing career opportunities, job applications and interviewing techniques. You will also benefit from visits to organisations such as the Energy Institute, and an annual programme of site visits and ‘experience talks’ in which former graduates and successful professionals currently working in the industry discuss their careers since leaving the University.
