Programme structure
The Natural Sciences route through the Liberal Arts and Sciences programme is the perfect option if you would mostly like to concentrate on scientific study. You can study multiple sciences in combination, whilst also having the option to study the arts and social sciences. This flexible programme will give you a diverse scientific education so you stand out in a competitive graduate market.
In Year 1, we invite you to select a Major, which will become your particular area of focus. You can also choose from a broad range of modules across the arts, sciences and social sciences to study alongside your Major. In addition, you will spend time with your fellow Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences students via the interdisciplinary modules offered by the School and our wide range of extra-curricular activities, which includes a team-building trip to Lake Coniston.
Year 2 has a similar structure. You will develop further expertise in your Major by taking more advanced modules, whilst retaining the freedom to select modules in unrelated subjects across the wider university. During this year, with your tutor’s help, you will plan your year abroad. Recent second year cohorts have ended the year with a study trip to Brussels.
Your third year is spent at one of our international partner institutions. Your year abroad gives you the chance to experience a different portfolio of modules and to learn in a fresh academic context.
You will return for your final year, where you will again study your Major alongside modules in different subjects. This will include a dissertation or extended research project, either in your Major subject or within Liberal Arts and Sciences. You will finally decide whether to graduate with a BA, BSc, MArt, MSci or Natural Sciences qualification, subject to your portfolio of modules.
Career opportunities
Internationally, Liberal Arts and Sciences graduates progress to the legal professions, major consultancy and management firms, postgraduate study or graduate entry to medicine (subject to following an appropriate pathway during the programme). Other students will progress to graduate study, and this can be accelerated in selected cases by access to Masters levels modules in the final year.
