Programme structure
Year one
Your studio modules will largely be workshop-based and you’ll learn professional production processes in weave, print and mixed media. You’ll also attend a comprehensive series of short workshops, which will equip you with the fundamental knowledge needed in textile design. This will inform the creation of your own textile design collection, where you’ll be supported by staff to design a collection in a discipline of your choice.
Over your first year you’ll study contextual practice modules that underpin your studio modules. You‘ll develop an awareness of contemporary design, and your own skills and learning style, while
also looking at the history and theory of design in weekly lectures and seminars.
o Process & production
o Contextualising & articulating practice
o Design & make
o Textile design histories
Year two
Your second year is outward facing, so you’ll learn about the realitiesof designing for the business with the help of our many industry partners. You’ll also look at the fundamentals of marketing, different modes of working practices, intellectual property law and the opportunities available to textile designers.
In the studio you’ll select a discipline to focus on for the remainder of the course, with the possibility to work across disciplines where appropriate. You’ll be asked to create design textile collections in response to briefs set by industry clients and partners, and national and international competitions. You’ll then present your collections to your clients, often in their own showrooms.
o Designing for a specific audience
o Historical, social, professional & contemporary contexts
o External engagement
o Theories & methodologies
Year three
This is an independently-driven year, supported by tutorials, where you’ll design collections for your final portfolio in response to briefs of your own devising. Your professional portfolio will be developed throughout your final year, helping you to maximise your employability whatever your chosen career path may be.
Employability and readiness for the industry is key so, as part of your professional practice, you’ll be required to fully cost and document a section of your final year’s work. You’ll also create your own self-promotional material in response to a personal post-course planning exercise and complete a dissertation.
