Programme structure

Year one

From day one you’ll be immersed in the working practices of picture desks, agencies and successful press and editorial practitioners. In your 1st year you’ll discover the technical and creative realities of your craft, while being supported by course staff to master the theory of reading the image, the history of the discipline and the fundamental elements of press and editorial business practice.

The ist year allows you to engage in practical modules, complemented by important theoretical studies in communication and copyright. In addition, you’ll also study practical magazine and layout production along with a module in business operations to prepare you for the industry.

o Theory – histories, practices and critical approaches to reading the image
o Practice – advanced skills in press and editorial photography
o Narrative – introduction to narrative models used by journalists and documentary makers

Year two

Independence, exploration and experimentation will drive you through a multiple genre portfolio that will test your practice and professionalism, informing your place and direction within press and
editorial photography. Theoretical studies alongside ethics, representation and media law as well as work placement support your development and your maturing photographic voice. 2nd year students are eligible to apply for study abroad through the Erasmus Programme.

Throughout your 2nd year you’ll be supported in developing your professional position via print and online publications, exhibitions, work placements and effective social networking. You’ll also enjoy a semester-long multimedia module that introduces you to audio collection and the broad skills required for creating broadcast quality storytelling.

Ownership and autonomy are the qualities you’ll develop in your 3rd year. Across both terms you’ll be working on your final major project within the subjects of your choice, compiling a portfolio to launch you and your career beyond the course.

The considerable practical component is supported through your dissertation, critical review skills, honed business practice and focused outputs. This year will see you take ownership of your photographic identity, laying the foundations for your career in press and editorial photography.
