Programme structure

Year One

The first year offers high levels of contact time in the studio and focuses on the acquisition of physical techniques and skills. You’ll practice contemporary techniques and improvisation, ballet and additional supplementary physical training.

Complementing this, you’ll explore and study dance cultures and histories, take part in projects and workshops in studio and site- based dance performance and choreography.

Year Two

The specialist modular pathways in the second year are designed to involve you in a range of directed, supervised and self-generated approaches to dance and performance or dance and choreography.

You’ll continue to develop your skills and abilities in technique and bodywork, lectures and critical seminars, and in intensive performance or choreographic projects. The pathways enable you to research and investigate techniques and skills, theories and contexts, and modes of performance, composition and audience engagement that inform and shape your chosen specialism.

Dance 8: Performance allows you to focus as a dancer on performance skills, experience working with professional choreographers, and explore cross-disciplinary project work to support your development as a performer.

Dance 8: Choreography enables you to develop your choreographic skills through intensive directed and collaborative projects. Working with video, sound and editing techniques equips you to choreograph for the screen and for other media.

Throughout the year you’ll expand your knowledge of the theories and contexts of dance through a variety of lectures, seminars and research projects.

Year Three

During third year you’ll expand your skills through collaborative projects, advanced physical training and creative and choreographic processes.

Technique classes, lectures, seminars and tutorials help to equip you for your final written research and practical projects. You will embark on an independent practical research project, a written research paper and a choreographic/performance project to be presented at the annual AMATA Showcase Festival.
