Programme structure
*Year One *
In your first year you’ll gain grounding in the fundamentals of creative music technology, from music composition and performance to music production and sound engineering.
You’ll receive technical and artistic guidance from staff and specialists through lectures, seminars, tutorials and practical music-making. This will support you in developing your musical skills, knowledge and your own creative voice. You’ll also gain a firm understanding of the business, developing analytical and problem-solving expertise, as well as the project management and interpersonal skills essential for professional success.
During this year you’ll receive high-level training in music technology software and hardware for recording, editing, production, sound design and live performance. At the same time you’ll be challenged to experiment and use these tools creatively to start developing your own artistic work.
*Year Two *
Year two balances core modules with a menu of specialist options through which you can build your sonic identity.
Core modules develop the fundamental knowledge and skills you’ll need, whilst the specialist options allow you to focus on your particular interests. These options range from writing music for the moving image, to studio composition; and from advanced recording, mixing and mastering to exploring the cutting edge of audio for emerging digital media. Year two offers numerous opportunities for collaboration and even the option of studying abroad in one of our partner institutions around the world.
*Year Three *
In your final year, you’ll have the freedom to develop your own projects. Recent projects have included working at major recording studios from New York to Thailand, researching and developing new technologies at an institute for music technology in Amsterdam, collaborating with musicians from the Icelandic Academy of Arts, and teaching music to children in Ghana. Other projects have included placements in post-production studios and record labels, starting up a music business, national and international touring and other valuable work experience.
After this project you’ll return to continue working on self-devised projects, including your professional portfolio, dissertation and a careers module, which will propel your entry into your chosen profession. All work in the third year will be supported through a generous allocation of one-to-one and project specific supervision by staff.
