What will I study?
Modules

Year One

Modules
The first-year modules provide a strong practical and theoretical introduction to the course.

Principles of Environmental Science
Gain an introduction to key laboratory and field techniques associated with environmental scientific procedures and research.

Climate, Soils and Vegetation
Study aspects of Environmental Science to better understand complex environmental issues such as global warming, land use management and natural hazard mitigation. Develop specific skills for analysing and interpreting weather, climate and soils, and the ability to use these skills in the sustainable management of soil as a resource.

Skills for Scientists
Explore career development and acquire transferable skills that are essential in the environmental employment sector. These include scientific and report writing, referencing techniques, presentations and IT skills.

Biodiversity Conservation
Explore the biological diversity on Earth, focusing on the abundance and distribution of species. Investigate the theories of evolution, causes of mass extinctions and conservation of species.

Ecology: Terrestrial and Water
Study the interaction of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors in relation to the distribution of populations and communities within ecosystems.

Introduction to Geology
Gain an understanding of geomorphology including geological timescales, rock types, structural, geology, palaeontology, mass extinction events and the use of geological maps.

Year Two
During the second year, you will develop skills in independent research and data analysis, and apply principles in a professional context.

Natural Resource Management
Explore the principles underlying the exploitation of natural resources, and cultivate a critical awareness of the social, economic and political importance of natural resource management. You will also evaluate the complex nature of managing natural resources.

Environmental Law and Policy
Investigate the development, implementation and impact of environmental policies and laws. Explore the important theme of protection of the environment via environmental politics, policy processes and generation with the ever increasing issue of securing sustainability.

Global Climate Change
Study the science of climate change, consider ethical conflict, analyse political arguments and apply reasoning to the resolution of this pressing environmental problem.

Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Analysis
Learn about the mapping and analytical techniques used in Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Explore the application of technology across a wide range of topic areas.

Advanced Analytical Techniques
Gain a grounding in the principles, methods and applications of modern analytical laboratory and field techniques. This module also includes a residential overseas field trip.

Experimental Design and Analysis
Prepare for your final year research dissertation, cultivating an understanding of research methodology, hypothesis testing, statistical analysis and data presentation.

Final year
As final year students on the BSc (Hons) course, you will apply your new knowledge and skills to the process of solving environmental problems.

Sustainability
Explore concepts of scale, place and human-environment relationships in the context of sustainability. Review the barriers between sustainable developments theory and practice and appraise the contrasting theories, explanations of, and approaches to sustainability.

Environmental Politics, Issues and Ethics
Explore issues in and perceptions of environment and society in order to systematically identify and evaluate the philosophies influencing Environmental Sciences.

Innovations and Energy
Investigate one of the most challenging problems exercising scientists of the 21st Century; how to harness and distribute safe, clean energy from sources that do not deplete with use. Consider the depletion of fossil fuels and the increasing demand for energy to evaluate the choices available for the future.

Dissertation
Undertake independent research, under supervision, in an area of Environmental Science-related subjects of your own choice.

Examples of optional modules:

Environmental Assessment and Management
Advanced Ecology
Biogeography
Applied Hydrology and Water Resources.

Career opportunities

Once you have graduated from this course, potential employers include:

Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
Environment Agency
Local Government
Environmental consultancies
Conservation agencies
Private companies.
Possible roles you may consider include:

Energy Management advisor
Sustainability Officer
Environmental auditor
Water Quality Scientist
Conservation advisor
Recycling Officer
Environmental Consultant.
What our students say
“I have a genuine passion for the environment that extends beyond my university life, and so a career in ecology and / or environmental science is my dream. I enjoy working outside, undertaking field work, and engaging in practical activities. I also value the challenge of lab and desk-based work: including analysis and data interpretation. I aspire to be in a career that really makes a difference to the environment; influencing the actions of others, whether it is on a small or large scale, to the best of my ability.”
