Career opportunities
Your BA in Education and French will prepare you for a broad range of employment or training options, including teacher training. Your educational knowledge will help you establish a career as a community education officer, early years teacher, education administrator, teacher, lecturer, special educational needs teacher or youth worker. Your language skills will suit you for work in the increasing number of careers where fluency in European languages is in high demand, as well as for French teaching.
Some graduates progress immediately to further study, either research or a Post-graduate training course, such as a Master’s in social work or a post-graduate teaching certificate (PGCE). For aspiring French teachers, the balanced combination of the two subjects is a sound basis for either secondary or primary teaching.
Throughout your training you will develop a wealth of subject-specific skills and other generic professional skills that can be easily transferred into almost any graduate or professional employment situation.
You will be able to evaluate and improve research practices, critically review debates on relevant issues, present data through a number of channels and articulate an informed response to enquiries. You will also have proven your abilities in writing for and speaking to a range of audiences, working effectively with others, and delivering work in time to meet specific deadlines.
The study of both French and Education requires clarity in planning and connected thinking in what are both academically demanding subjects. The development of language skills is coupled with the ability to deal with data and research in a structured way. This puts you at an advantage over your competitors in any general employment context, and your specialism in Education signals an obvious career path, should you choose to pursue it.
