Programme structure

Your course in brief

Year 1

You will be introduced to studio practice and creative research, providing context for your study in contemporary art practice, embedding essential intellectual and technical skills and competences.

Year 2

You will learn to reflect and critically evaluate your work and develop an understanding of professional public exhibition and presentation.

Year 3

Your final year culminates in your degree show exhibition together with the production of a dissertation that underpins your art practice.

Career opportunities

On completion of the BA, many of our students move straight into work as practicing artists, with a number of graduates receiving critical acclaim for their work. Others move into related fields.

A Fine Art degree will develop your intellectual curiosity as well as developing the technical competency, critical thinking and analytical skills to excel in a career in the creative and cultural sector. Fine Art graduates are perfectly placed to move into roles in community arts; teaching; curating; arts management; assisting artists; gallery or studio management.

You will have the enviable opportunity to apply for graduate schemes such as Graduate Studio Northumbria (GSN), where you will have access to the resources and staff support needed to further develop your professional practice. You may also choose to further your learning on the Northumbria Master of Fine Art course, delivered in partnership with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and based in BALTIC 39.
