Programme structure
Your course in brief
Year 1
You will be introduced to the key areas of chemistry and begin to develop analytical and practical laboratory skills.
Year 2
By examining the core themes of chemistry further you will increase in confidence in both analysis and application. Additionally you will study chemical information sciences, explore more deeply the world of applied chemistry and continue to develop your laboratory investigational skills.
Year 3
(Optional placement year) You will have the opportunity to spend a year in industry, developing commercial knowledge and enhancing your job prospects.
Year 4
(Year 3 if work placement is not undertaken) You will study core chemistry, developing the inorganic, organic, physical and analytical themes from earlier years and also specialise in chosen areas through the study of specialist option modules and the completion of a research project.
Year 5
You will study a selection of topics at the frontiers of research, developing your own hypothesis and completing a second and more probing independent research project. You will explore topics relating to current staff research interests, meaning you are learning at the forefront of the subject.
Career opportunities
You will graduate from MChem experienced in practical laboratory work and with advanced computing skills. You will produce a research project from first hypothesis through to publication and will have developed transferable skills in communication, problem-solving and team-working. Graduates will be able to enter a range of careers within the chemical and pharmaceutical industries or continue on to PhD level.
There is a diverse range of career options open to chemistry graduates, not only in traditional roles but across the wider field. Previous Northumbria graduates have found employment not only in scientific teaching and roles in the chemical industry but also in areas such as business and management, finance, marketing and sales.
