Career opportunities
You will be fully supported with developing your employability skills throughout the degree scheme. The degree will allow you to develop specialist skills such as the ability to identify plants and animals using knowledge and biological keys and analyse environmental and biological data from the field as well as developing a range of transferable skills highly valued by employers.
Increasing awareness of the impact of environmental threats means that demand for qualified ecologists is growing. With their thorough training in fieldwork, laboratory skills and data analysis, our Ecology graduates are well-placed to enter careers in research or industry in fields related to conservation and environmental protection. The breadth of the course also presents a sound basis for a career in teaching, either in a school or college or in a field centre. Other career opportunities include working for government or commercial laboratories, local or national government, environmental consultancy, science writing and public services. Our graduates are excellently placed to apply for jobs with organisations such as DEFRA, the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, Natural England, ADAS, the Forestry Commission, Scottish Wildlife Trust, the Wales Environment Link, the National Grid, and Severn Trent Water. Furthermore, some Ecology graduates transfer to other careers including business, commerce and law after further professional training.
