Programme structure

Programme Year One

Students are introduced to the basic methods of archaeology and the main periods and areas taught at Liverpool. Students take six compulsory modules (plus two optional modules) which currently include:

The Origins of Humanity
Bronze Age Civilizations in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Near East
Empires and Citizens in the Classical Mediterranean and the Near East
From Boudicca to the Beatles – a Material Exploration of the British Past
Principles of Archaeology
The Practice of Archaeology

Programme Year Two

Students take two compulsory modules (Archaeological Excavation Skills and Artefacts and Technology), and then choose a further two modules from a selection that currently includes the following:

Archaeology and the Microscope
European Prehistory
Ancient Warfare
Hunter/Gatherer Societies
Human Osteoarchaeology
The Archaeology of Roman Britain
International Relations in the Ancient World 1500-1200BC

Programme Year Three

Students take three compulsory modules:

The dissertation (equivalent to two modules), which is a subject of the student’s choice researched in depth
Archaeology and Contemporary Society: politics and ethics
Students then choose their five remaining modules from a list of over 20, which currently includes the following:

The Origins of Agriculture and Sedentism in the Near East
Neolithic and early Bronze Age Britain
Iron Age Europe: Beyond the Celts
Palaeolithic Art in Europe
Houses and Households in the Greek and Roman World
At least two of the chosen modules should be related to the dissertation topic.

Our former students enjoy careers in many professions, including Trainee Accountant (Financial, Management and Chartered); Administration Manager; Recruitment Consultant; Tax Assistant; Trainee Investment Manager; Data Analyst; Mortgage Adviser; Banker; Fundraising Manager; Human Resources Officer; Advertising Executive; Marketing Coordinator; Strategic Development Analyst; Social Media Graduate; Graduate Trainee (including retail organisations, financial organisations, the Civil Service and other blue chip companies); Sales Executive.

Some graduates have pursued self-employment in areas including marketing and business consultancy, export and events promotion.
