Programme structure
Year 1 (FHEQ Level 4)
In Year 1, you will be given an introduction to the diverse nature of the hospitality industry and the wide range of products and services that the industry encompasses. This will include an overview of the characteristics that differentiate each sector of the industry, its variety of markets, the needs of its customers and an understanding of staffing dimensions required to meet these. You will also start to learn key management concepts through modules in Marketing Principles and Financial Accounting, as well as building workplace skills through ‘Developing Professionals’.
Modules in Restaurant Management and Restaurant Operations are based in the Lakeside Restaurant, giving you an understanding of the realities of working and managing in a restaurant environment.

Year 2 (FHEQ Level 5)
In Year 2, you continue your exploration of the industry and of broader management skills, studying Operations Analysis, Services Marketing, Financial Management and Managing Organisations and Human Resources. Other key concepts are also introduced, in modules such as Professional Ethics.
Elective modules allow you to extend your knowledge in areas that you find particularly interesting. These modules include Consumer Behaviour, International Hospitality in Practice, Aspects of Food, and Issues in Event Management.

Year 3 (FHEQ Level 6)
In Year 3, you have more choice available through your elective modules as you decide what areas of the industry you want to concentrate on. You will have compulsory modules in Sustainable Operations and Strategic Analysis of Hospitality Companies.
In addition, you can choose from modules in areas such as Entrepreneurship, Hospitality Events Management (where you plan and run an event), Innovation and New Product Development, and Intercultural Management in the Hospitality Industry, according to your interests and career plans.

Year 4 (FHEQ Level 7)
The graduate employment market increasingly demands the highest qualifications and the ability to hit the ground running when taking up a new position. At Surrey, we have responded to this demand by creating our new MBus qualification.
A further advantage of the MBus is that you graduate in June, giving you a head-start in the postgraduate job market where graduation is normally in October. It also makes you more experienced and better qualified than Bachelors students graduating in June.
During the MBus year you will, in addition to taking advanced classes, undertake a substantial piece of applied research, demonstrating your ability to put theory into practice and providing you with a showcase project to impress future employers.
You can apply directly for the full MBus programme or transfer into it during your BSc studies – providing you achieve high grades in your key modules. Either way, the MBus is covered by the student loan scheme – potentially saving you thousands of pounds you may have to spend upfront on a separate Masters degree.
As with our Bachelors degrees, the MBus also offers you the chance to study abroad in your second year and undertake a Professional Training placement in your third year.
