Programme structure

What will I study?
Years One and Two
On this course there is equal attention given to your professional development and teaching skills. In Years One and Two there is an emphasis on understanding development and progression across the three to eleven age range. You will study all aspects of the primary and early years curriculum.

Years Three and Four
In Years Three and Four you opt to focus on teaching either the three to seven age range or the five to eleven age range, although the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) qualifies you to teach across the whole three to eleven age range.

Early Years specialism
If you opt for the three to seven (early years) strand, you will continue to study English, Mathematics and Science tailored to the specific needs of this age phase. Your studies will concentrate on the breadth and interrelated nature of the curriculum, and how children learn, and will support you in teaching in Early Years settings or Key Stage One classrooms.

Primary subject specialism (5 – 11 years)
If you opt for the five to eleven strand you will continue to study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science in Year Three, choosing to specialise in one during Year Four.. You will also opt to develop strengths in linked foundation areas. Currently these are art, design and technology, the humanities or physical education and music.

Career opportunities

Your career development
This course is a popular and effective route into primary school teaching. For the last five years at least 95% of our graduates have gained employment as a teacher on graduating and we have excellent retention rates five years into the role (National College for Teaching and Leadership data (NCTL), 2012).

Our close relationships with partnership schools leads to a high proportion of graduates taking up employment locally.

With four periods of professional practice and wider enrichment opportunities, such as field work and specialisation, our graduates are confident, critical and creative professionals committed to the development of all through education and highly employable. Our emphasis on subject leadership in the final year of the course ensures that graduates are well placed to lead innovative practice in school.

Teaching salaries
The average starting salary for a teacher is £22,900 and can rise by 30% after the first four years (salary data from the NCTL website, September 2012). Experienced teachers can earn up to £56,000 (£64,000 in London), with Head Teachers reaching salaries of up to £112,000.
