Programme structure

First year
In the first year, you gain a firm grounding in both intellectual and practical foundations of archaeology, with one of the highlights of the year being the two-week Field School. In parallel, you gain an introduction to anthropological perspectives.

Second year
The second year develops your understanding of the interpretative frameworks and methods of archaeology and anthropology, while at the same time allowing you to pursue specialist areas of study through the seminar module and range of optional modules.

Students take a total of 120 credits: 80 credits of compulsory modules and 40 credits of optional modules. For the optional modules, you can choose to take 20 credits in each discipline or take all 40 credits in the same discipline.

Year abroad
You can apply to study abroad for a year in an approved university around the world. If you achieve a grade of 2.1 or above in your first year then you will be invited to apply for a Year Abroad in your second year. If your application is successful, you will go abroad in your third year and return to us for your final year. Find out more.

Final year
The highlight of the final year is your dissertation. Working one-on-one with a supervisor, you will complete a substantial research project on a subject of special interest to you. In addition, you will choose 80 credits of optional modules to build your own specialist final year programme of study whether this is mainly archaeological, mainly anthropological, or a combination of both disciplines.
