Programme structure
Recently re-designed to better prepare our graduates for business challenges they are likely to face in their future careers this course offers one of the most exciting undergraduate experiences. Our business programmes are all stand-alone degree programmes but offer the flexibility and specialism of undergraduate ‘pathways’.
The course is organised into four main phases with over 100 modules to choose from: in year 1 the aim is to build a foundation in key areas of knowledge and understanding while also motivating you in your chosen subject; year 2 is your opportunity to explore and experiment in a range of subjects and topics, including over 50 modules outside of business and management; in year 3 you will spend a minimum of 30 weeks on a work placement; and your final year is the time to focus and specialise on a major domain of business. The course is designed so that you may choose to transfer to another programme after the first or second year as your interests and future plans take shape.
Our business programmes share a new common first year which is highly distinctive in grounding the study of business and management in a ‘big history’ of human intellectual and technological advancement. By the end of the first year you will be able to describe how business became the central productive force in capitalist societies; how the major technological breakthroughs during the British Industrial Revolution irreversibly changed the world of business; and how ideas about managing and work have affected the lives of everyone. Southampton Business programmes are different in the way they explore ‘big ideas’ and interdisciplinary topics as well as the functional techniques or business and management.
In year 2 you have the opportunity to take modules in a wide range of business subjects, including SAS Programming, Business forecasting and Business Simulation. You also have the opportunity to broaden your skills by taking modules from other schools such as Computer Science, History and Languages, or some of our highly innovative interdisciplinary cross-faculty modules such as Global Challenges, Web Science, and Sustainability.
In year 3 you will spend at least 30 weeks on an approved industrial placement in a business organisation.
In your final year you can build on your strengths from year 1 and 2, as well as your experience gained in year 3 to conduct an extended piece of work in an area of your choice through your dissertation.
Career opportunities
This course is highly relevant for students considering embarking on a technical or managerial career in a range of private, public and third sector organisations. Due to the wide range of topics studied, it will also be suitable for those considering working in a variety of different sectors in the UK and internationally. Many companies have already felt the need for business analytics and are recruiting people with the right skills, and many more are expected to follow. As such there are high employability prospects for graduates.
