Programme structure
Physics and astronomy are dynamic subjects that are continually being developed by new discoveries and innovations. You will be taught by research active physicists who have an outstanding international reputation in their research areas.
Our distinctive MPhys Physics with Astronomy will build upon the MPhys Physics programme and give you a more advanced understanding of high-energy astronomy and the study of compact objects.
Key areas of study include:
physics of the solar system
stellar evolution
galaxies
cosmology
You will cover topics such as solar flares, white dwarfs, black holes and quasars.
In the second year, our top students have the opportunity to visit Tenerife for an intensive period of astronomical observation at the Izana Observatory.
In your final year, you will study specialist topics at an advanced level and to acquire key generic and research scientific skills. You will also get involved with cutting-edge research projects, which often involve working with the latest results from international observatories.
Career opportunities
At Southampton MPhys programmes are designed around problem-based learning rather than simple knowledge transfer, helping you to understand the core principles of relativity, quantum mechanics and electromagnetism. Your interpretations of these will shape your own theories about the universe.
This Astronomy combination specialises in high-energy astronomy and the study of compact objects. It also includes stellar evolution, galaxies and cosmology, and a field trip to Tenerife in year two.
Southampton degree programmes are structured to offer a broad amount of choice, while ensuring an overall coherence to your individual selections.
All our courses are taught by leading experts in their fields and the department is one of just five in the UK to be consistently ranked as “world leading” or “internationally excellent”.
First-class MPhys students will have the chance to spend their final year immersed in a research environment. Astronomers may attend the Harvard Smithsonian Institute in the USA. Limited places on these programmes are open through competition to our top students at the end of the second year.
