Programme structure
Nanotechnology and Nanoscience involve the study of matter and machines down to scales of a billionth of a metre. It is one of the most dynamic areas of research and development as it plays a critical role both in basic physics and applied physics and engineering.
Nanotechnology and Nanoscience are highly interdisciplinary fields, so in addition to the core studies of a physics degree, you will learn fundamental aspects of how physics, photonics, electronics, chemistry, and biochemistry, relate to nanotechnology and its numerous current and potential future applications.
Our distinctive MPhys Physics with Nanotechnology will build upon the MPhys Physics programme and give you a more advanced understanding of nanotechnology. The course is underpinned by building your toolkit to work at the nanoscale, and expanding your philosophical intuition of the nano approach.
Key areas of study include:
quantum devices
nanoscience
light and matter
molecular materials
processing of devices
molecular basis of life
In your final year, you will have the opportunity to study specialist topics at an advanced level and to acquire key generic and research scientific skills. Much of your project work will be based in our NanoFabrication Centre, a state-of-the-art facility for microfabrication and high-spec nanofabrication, and one of the premiere cleanrooms in Europe.
Career opportunities
Employability is embedded into modules from the first year onwards and right from the first lecture. We explain the degree skills which are being taught throughout the modules and offer a number of optional employability modules.
We place great importance on the development of graduate skills vital for future employment by adding transferrable skills into learning and teaching.
Our degrees are a passport to vocational and non-vocational careers alike, with recent graduates employed in roles ranging from medical physics, scientific journalism, teaching, law and medical research.
