Programme structure
The first two years of the BEng in Civil Engineering introduce you to the key areas of knowledge and skills in Civil Engineering, through four compulsory modules each semester.
Building on this, in your final year you will study the application of these basic principles in the key civil engineering discipline areas of structures, geotechnics, hydraulics and highways. In the second semester a group design project enables you to apply what you have learned to solving an inter-disciplinary design challenge of your choice. You will also have the opportunity to pursue a particular subject of your own interest in an individual research project on which you will be working through the year.
Career opportunities
The university works closely with employers in the civil and environmental engineering industry to give students industrial experience during the course. This includes the Southampton University Corporate Civil and Environmental Scholarship Scheme (SUCCESS), which provides industrial sponsorships to students studying civil and environmental engineering. The industrial sponsorship includes an annual bursary, summer work placements and possible long-term employment after graduation. All first- and second-year civil and environmental engineering students are eligible to apply. Once awarded, the sponsorship is normally effective until you graduate.
When you graduate with your degree in Environmental Engineering, you will have established connections with employers in the industry and you will have gained valuable industry experience. The final year of the course is industrial-style – with problems and solutions of a standard which would be expected in industry.
