Programme structure

Year 1

The first year provides a background in acoustics, emphasising the physics and mathematics of acoustics, sound and vibration.

Semester One

Compulsory:
Design and Computing
Mechanics, Structures and Materials
Thermofluids
Electrical and Electronic Systems
Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment
Acoustics 1

Semester Two

Compulsory:
Design and Computing
Mechanics, Structures and Materials
Thermofluids
Electrical and Electronic Systems
Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment
Acoustics 1

Year 2

The second year covers further acoustics, vibration, mathematics, design, fluid dynamics and introduces audio technology and control. A total of 120 credits across two semesters. A large element is the design project, currently the design, build and test of an active two cone loudspeaker.

Semester One

Compulsory:
Systems Design and Computing

Acoustics II
Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment Part II

Semester Two

Compulsory:
Systems Design and Computing
Mechanics, Machines and Vibration
Fluid Mechanics
Engineering Management and Law
Audio and Signal Processing

Year 3

BEng Acoustical Engineering students undertake a substantial individual project in year 3. You can either select a topic from a list proposed by teaching staff or pursue an idea of your own, with appropriate permission and guidance. It is expected that you will spend one third of your time in year 3 on your individual project. At the end of year 3 there is an exit award of BEng (Hons) Acoustical Engineering.

Semester One

Compulsory:
Individual Project
Management 1
Acoustical Engineering Design

Optional:
Human Factors in Engineering
Underwater Acoustics 1
Musical Instrument Acoustics
Signal Processing
Digital Signals and Systems
Audio Reproduction
Noise Control

Semester Two

Compulsory:
Individual Project
Acoustical Engineering Design
Management 2

Optional:
Human Factors in Engineering
Automotive II – Refinement
